You probably love your cat and want the best for it, so it may be hard for you to deny it the chance to roam outdoors.

If you think your cat must spend time outdoors to have a more interesting life, this is a myth. In fact, studies reveal that most indoor cats live up to 15 or more years.

Moreover, the outdoor environment poses various risks, including infectious diseases and predators to your pet. If you’re wondering how to keep your cat happy indoors, here’s how.

Cat Play

Playtime is necessary for an indoor cat, so sessions should be regular and frequent. Make sure you play with your cat daily and try different toys that allow him to chase, kick, and stalk.

It’s also important you switch them occasionally so that they appear new and interesting to your pet. Rotating the toys ensures the cat doesn’t get bored with similar toys.

It’s important you don’t permit your cat to use your body as “prey” because this can ultimately lead to injury. It’s also not advisable to engage your pet in play with your feet and hands beneath a blanket.

If your pet is to remain interested, you must aim to offer at least three sessions daily. In the event that you won’t be there to supervise, make sure you leave out toys, for instance paper bags.

Appropriate Feeding

A suitable diet is very important for your cat’ wellbeing, so you must bear in mind that obesity is a common cause of issues among domesticated pets.

Seek quality food in your preferred pet shop and ensure you purchase something that’s age-appropriate. When it comes to quantities, follow the instructions on the package.

If you’re unsure about the brand to select, consult your veterinarian. You should also be cautious with treats. Cats are constantly watching out for good food and will plead for their preferred piece of fish. Therefore, offer a treat occasionally to prevent obesity.

Offer Rooms with Views

Regardless of the size of your home, your indoor pet will identify its sounds and sights within a few days. Provide some visual stimulation by allowing sufficient opportunity to look outside a window.

Beware though that the outside view may not always work. For instance, if your yard attracts other cats from your neighborhood, the sight might frustrate your cat.

Nevertheless, blocking these cats from visiting or using sprinklers to discourage them may solve the issue.

Maintaining a Clean Environment

Part of keeping your cat happy is maintaining a safe and clean environment. Furthermore, cats are extremely smell-sensitive and need a spotless setting to be happy.

Consider Giving Your Pet some Company

While it’s true that some cats don’t relate well to other cats, many enjoy a playmate or companionship, particularly if you introduce them pleasantly and slowly.

Being cooped up in the house all day could also leave your pet feeling lonely, particularly if you leave him for lengthy periods.

Nevertheless, you must consider various factors before getting another cat. It’s advisable you seek advice from your vet or local animal shelter about introducing another cat.

If you decide to keep your cat indoors, you’ll need to be aware of the additional responsibility this may bring.

You’ll also need to take the trouble and time to make sure the indoor setting provides opportunities to express as many natural behaviors as possible. If you don’t know where to start, these tips will prove invaluable.
