With the New Year around the corner, decluttering your apartment might be seemingly easy. However, your new year’s energy is likely to wane after January, resulting in an overwhelming project. Thankfully, the New Year offers an excellent opportunity for a fresh beginning to move forward and reflect on new space. Also, it’s an excellent opportunity for setting new goals, resolutions, and decluttering.

If you haven’t sorted through your belongings in a while, perhaps it’s time you decluttered for the New Year. Here’s a list of tips to declutter and organize your apartment to create new space.

Go through Rooms Separately

Your apartment has different rooms with varied purposes, so the items needed for every room will vary. The ideal way of decluttering your rental intentionally and efficiently is by tackling rooms separately. Ensure you address every unnecessary item within each space before you move to another room. This way, you won’t experience frustration while working.

At the same time, you’ll enjoy a sense of accomplishment while at it. Once you declutter each space successfully, you’ll gain motivation to work on the rest of the apartment upon creating new space in your unit.

Opt for Furnishings that Maximize Space

Try to maximize the space of each room in your apartment. It’s worth noting that clean lines, expanses of glass, and substantial use of natural materials help your new space feel bigger and more comfy. To complement and enhance the experience further, choosing appropriately sized furniture-whether modern or traditional, can give your room a more spacious feel.

The same applies to smaller items, for instance, table lamps and wall art. What’s important is that they have ample space to make sure they don’t make the shelf or tabletop feel crowded the same way furniture shouldn’t make your room feel overly full.

Hang Items with Pockets and Hooks

If you own extra stuff that can’t fit in an ottoman or other piece of furniture, you need to apply some creativity. You might want to use pockets and hooks that suspend from the wall to give you additional storage space you wouldn’t have otherwise.

Clothes racks, shoe racks, and hanging closets are excellent options for additional storage. Suspending items from hooks and pockets equally allows you to express some creativity that makes your rental and new space stand out.

Develop an Organization System

As you start organizing rooms separately, you’ll require a plan for sorting the items. You must clean the room actively as you determine what you’ll keep and what you’ll discard to ensure smooth decluttering. A popular method involves using three boxes to help you determine what you need and don’t need. You’ll use the three boxes to keep what you need, what to discard, and what to keep in storage for a certain duration.

Every Space Must Serve the Planned Purpose

An important rule when it comes to organization is that each space should serve the intended purpose. For instance, you should have sufficient room on your coffee table to place a cup of coffee. On the same note, a nightstand should simply accommodate a book, lamp, and perhaps a spot for charging your cell phone.

Final Thoughts

Although decluttering your apartment can be seemingly overwhelming, it’s manageable. You simply need to develop an action plan to pull it off. These tips will transform your apartment while creating new space for the New Year.
