A Complete Checklist-Things To Do After You Move In

Evaluating a to-do list once you shift into your new rental could make the seemingly great task of moving much easier.

Nobody enjoys the process of moving, which can be exhaustive and overwhelming. Establishing what to start with once you move into a new place could overwhelm you as well. Here’s a list of things you should do after moving in.

Get the Utilities Running

When you relocate to a new place, you might find the utilities shut off, particularly if there was a considerable gap between you and the former tenant. You might have to contact the gas provider, power company, or water company to get them turned on. In the event that you find them on, you’ll have to arrange for them to be in your name.

Clean the Space

The minute you shift into a new place, the first thing you should do is note the things that need cleaning. It’s likely the previous tenant didn’t conduct a thorough cleaning, so it’s upon you to ensure the entire home is clean before you can arrange your items.

Alter the Locks

You have no clue whether strangers might have keys to your new unit. Therefore, you should contact a locksmith immediately and have them changed. In case your door doesn’t have a deadbolt, ensure the locksmith installs one.

On average, most locksmiths charge approximately $100 for a home visit plus additional charges for the keys. This is the best time to alter the locks to work with one key.

Change of Address

Even if you update your new address on social media or send cards to this effect, you still have to change it officially with the U.S. Postal Service along with your insurance and bank.

You can change your address with the Postal Service in person or online and it ensures the forwarding of your mail to your new place for 60 days. However, it will stop forwarding your new mail eventually, so it’s imperative you inform specific accounts and companies yourself.

Install a Security System

For people who are safety conscious, a security system is frequently necessary for peace of mind. If the unit has one installed already, it won’t take time for the security firm to activate it.

A number of companies install systems that allow you to set the alarm once you’re inside your home at night; this is an extra comfort for singles. Make sure you select strong codes for you and for your guests.

Update Rental Insurance

Besides updating your address, it might be necessary to purchase or modify your insurance policy. If you lack insurance, it’s important you obtain a policy that will provide adequate coverage for your belongings. It should protect you and your items from floods, natural disasters, and other unforeseen situations.

On the other hand, if you have an existing policy, you might need to adjust it depending on your new living circumstance. Remember, geographic locations and amenities such as security systems are likely to affect the policy prices.

While moving to a new place can be exciting, the thought of unpacking and settling can overwhelm you. Fortunately, this guide reveals the things you should do once you move in.
