The Beauty Is In The Contrast

The Beauty Is In The Contrast

As a material, timber is timeless and there’s a species for every style and purpose. Whether you want something rustic, durable, or exotic, you’ll find a timber for that. However, the many choices can frustrate you when it comes to decorating.

Bear in mind that variation in pattern, color, style, and texture is crucial to decorating and keeps things appealing. Therefore, you should avoid matching furniture and floors because you’ll end up with a flat look. Fortunately, these tips will ensure you create a cohesive look in your home.

Color

A common issue homeowners face with timber furniture and flooring is color matching. Many people feel that their home will appear dull if they choose timber flooring. Contrary to this principle, this mainly depends on the color and type of timber you choose.

If your wooden floors are light, choose darker walls. However, they shouldn’t be too dark. Rather, they should be dark enough to ensure you accentuate a contrast. On the other hand, if the flooring is dark, opt for light leather sofas and walls.

Be mindful to choose a sofa that’s slightly darker or lighter than the floor. The room can appear somber and overcrowded, so experiment to locate the appropriate balance of styles and textures.

Accessories

Items such as cushions, wall art, mirrors, and other comparable pieces can make a difference to your space. In fact, they can enhance your room by adding color and changing the setting.

Ensure you use colors that bring out the timber tones. For instance, if your sofa has a neutral color like light grey or cream, red cushions will contrast your sofa and tie your room together.

Texture

A significant consideration when blending textures is the texture of every surface. Contrasting smooth and rough finishes or small and wide planks will help different timbers work together.

Style

Another decision you must make as a homeowner is choosing whether your style will be traditional or contemporary. Contemporary timber furniture typically has square edges with various straight lines and a symmetrical and uniform layout design.

On the other hand, traditional style focuses on details like turned or tapered legs. While the current trends focus on modern styles with vibrant colors, it’s important to select a style that suits your home and one that you find enjoyable.

Finish

Instead of using a solid white paint, a worn finish preserves the timber’s raw character while breaking up the appearance with new tones. Consider green-grey and pale grey for a historical and timeless look that can suit modern or traditional schemes.

Rugs

Although timber lacks the softness of carpet, it’s not nearly as hard as tile underfoot. However, repeated footsteps throughout the day can cause discomfort, so decrease the effect and any unpleasant effect on your body with area rugs that enhance comfort.

Layering rugs on top of timber flooring helps define living rooms in open spaces and anchor accent chairs and sofas into a cohesive group.

Focal Point

Select a standout piece of furniture in the room and use contrasting yet muted, finishes and tones around it. You’ll discover the focal point attracts the eye and the rest of the pieces complement the standout furniture without overpowering the space.

Final Thoughts

You can easily become confused especially when it comes to choosing the appropriate type of furniture for your timber flooring. Remember, when it comes to design, there’s never a wrong or right rule-only what suits you.

You need to feel comfortable in your home and space, so experiment and explore until you achieve the perfect balance.
