A major frustration of residing in a space with restricted light is the seemingly impossible task of maintaining thriving plants.

While every plant requires light for survival, even those experiencing a shortage of light can do well if you know what to look for.

Although selecting houseplants for low light apartments can be somewhat daunting, this list should be a great start.

1. Spider Plant

The spider plant has become a very popular houseplant in the United States. The indoor plant is excellent for beginners because it can tolerate all kinds of neglect.

The plant has lengthy, arching, and variegated leaves, making it ideal for hanging baskets. Plants with variegated leaves are easily detachable and take root rapidly in moist soil.

The plants are famous for their capacity to absorb harmful atmospheric gases, substituting formaldehyde gases.

While the plant is easy to grow, it requires a fair light amount and you can hang it next to a window. The problem with neglect is that the plants can appear untidy if you don’t place them in a hanging basket.

Ensure you water it liberally throughout the growing season (spring to fall) because it grows fast.

2. Snake Plant

Numerous varieties of snake plants exist, including Bird’s Nest and Golden Hahnii and people grow the flowering species mainly for its slick looking lengthy leaves.

Anyone can grow the slow growing plant due to its high or low sun light tolerance and ease of watering. The snake plant is among the hardiest houseplants that demands little attention.

The plant also features succulent and waxy-coated leaves, making it drought resistant. You’ll appreciate that the plant is efficient at eliminating formaldehyde, benzene, and other dangerous toxins.

While the plants aren’t highly toxic, they can generate uncomfortable symptoms for dogs or cats if ingested.

3. Peace Lily

Recognized as a great option for enhancing indoor air quality, the Peace Lily is also among the few low-light plants that produces flowers.

They’ve grown popular as housewarming gifts and can withstand low to medium light. The tropical plant also neutralizes and breaks down toxic gases such as carbon monoxide and formaldehyde.

Fortunately, you can care for them easily and their nature makes them favorite houseplants. You can find them in various sizes including large, medium, and small.

In terms of care and maintenance, a blend of light and shade is ideal if you can offer it. If you notice the yellowing of leaves, bear in mind that this could be due to excess sunlight.

4. Parlor Palm

The plant grows easily and can tolerate room temperatures. Furthermore, it doesn’t need excess watering and lighting should just be enough.

The plant grows to a manageable height of 2-4 ft, which is appropriate for indoor plants. The plant is especially suitable for new growers because it facilitates easy planting.

5. ZZ Plant

The plant has grown increasingly popular over the years. They’re forgiving if you forget to water them  and they rarely need fertilization. Bear in mind that lengthy periods without water will cause dormancy, leading to leaf dropping.

Do you reside in low-light apartments but don’t know which houseplants to maintain? This invaluable list will reveal the best options.
