Are you facing challenges in decorating your small living room? Don’t fret. These tricks will help you make the most of your small space.

Decorating a small living room poses distinctive challenges for all designers. Designing the living room can be particularly tricky because it’s where you probably spend most of your time.

Nevertheless, these strategies can transform a cramped-feeling area into one that’s aesthetically pleasing and cozy.

1. Mirrors

A small living room, particularly if it has few windows, can give a boxed-in feeling. While mirrors can make a small space appear larger, you must be strategic.

The accessories function best through light reflection.  However, beware of what your mirror reflects by standing in various positions in the room.

A common trick is hanging a huge mirror in a central position to form a focal point. For light reflection and a nice ambiance, place it behind a source of light, for instance pendant lamp or candle.

If possible, place the mirror across a window, so it reflects the outside view, giving the impression of an additional window.

2. Color Scheme

The adoption of neutral colors on the ceiling, floor, and furniture upholstery is a popular idea for small living rooms.

You’ll find that neutral colors combined with lighter shades of green and blue work well in a small area. Consider using brighter colors in pillows or accent rugs.

Soft hues also illuminate a room through light reflection. Besides expanding an area, a neutral palette introduces immediate sophistication and creates a relaxing environment.

Bear in mind that a three-color palette is ideal for small spaces. If you’re keen on texture, consider a monochromatic scheme.

3. Furniture Selection

When shopping for furniture, consider visual weight, which describes an object’s perceived heaviness based on size, design, and color.

Select pieces with a lightweight appearance because heavier ones tend to constrict space. During furniture selection, opt for pale hues over darker ones and choose pieces with legs while avoiding boxy ones.

Bear in mind that end and coffee tables in glass and metal consume less visual space unlike wooden ones since you can see through them.

It’s also important to note that any furnishings that don’t hinder views give a feeling of openness. Ensure you select small-scale furniture, which won’t overpower a room or dominate space.

4. Highlight Vertical Lines

People often forget that a room features a vertical axis. If a high ceiling exists in your living room, capitalize on the additional space by decorating it in a way that draws your eye upward.

A stylish way of accomplishing this goal involves the inclusion of floor-to-ceiling drapes. Other ways include vertical paintings, floor lamps, and mantles.

5. Include Hidden Storage

Select furniture with built-in storage to decrease clutter. A storage ottoman or trunk as a coffee table functions well. Along the room’s perimeter, consider a small credenza or chest of drawers rather than a console table to enhance storage options.

6. Include Plants

Similar to mirrors, plants are a great way to increase depth to a small living space. You’ll discover that lush greenery not only softens corners but also tricks the eye into thinking there’s more space than there actually is. Plants are particularly effective in corners as well as behind or beside sofas and chairs.

7. Lighting

Lighting is significant in any room, more so in a small one. Keep window treatments airy and light to allow natural light to shine through or have drapes that you can pull back. Ensure there’s additional lighting during evenings or when there’s negligible natural light.

Your living room, irrespective of size must be able to function as an entertaining and relaxation space. While decorating a small living room can be challenging, these tricks and strategies will certainly transform your space.
