The Dallas Bikeway System contains over 136 miles of cycle lanes designed for both recreational purposes and to make commuting throughout the city easier. The Houston Bikeway Program also has over 160 miles of cycle lanes within the city limits alone.
If you’re planning on moving to an apartment in one of these cities, make sure you have the facilities to store bicycles just in case you want to take advantage of these eco-friendly highways.
Common Issues
Storing bikes in an apartment can be a problem. The last thing you want is a dirty, gritty bike resting against your couch. Space presents another issue altogether; and if you haven’t got much room there’s nothing more frustrating than having to constantly maneuver in between bicycles to get from one room to another.
Quite simply, bikes don’t belong in the living space. However, there are actually plenty of things you can do to resolve this issue.
Bike Racks
There are various forms of bike rack available that are designed specifically to store multiple bikes; however, they still require a little space and may be a bit of an eyesore if they are set up in your living area.
Some racks will store bikes vertically with the wheels against the wall. These are more suitable to narrow spaces and may even fit in a large cupboard. Most racks store bikes horizontally with the two wheels parallel to the wall. Which type of rack you choose should be determined by your available space.
Bike Hangers
Bike hangers work in the same way as jacket hangers. They stand up vertically on a rack and have different levels to hold up a bike. Bike hangers must be screwed into a wall to prevent them from toppling over from the weight.
Get Creative
Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and use something a little less conventional. Hunting trophy racks can make excellent bike holders. If you have a bike that you are proud of and want to show off, give it a clean and hang it up in your living area to use as an accent piece.
Searching for an Apartment
If you’re a keen cyclist who is looking for an apartment in Dallas or Houston TX, you should actively look for somewhere that will accommodate your bicycles. If you’re using an apartment finding service, let them know that you’ll need the extra space and they will try to locate a suitable property.
While you’re viewing apartments, have your measurements at hand so you know exactly how much space you’ll require. Make sure you measure your bike both horizontally and vertically. If you already have a bike rack or hanger, measure that as well just to be on the safe side.
