Houston

Houston is a Texan city that’s split between South and North Side. The city has been influential to societies and communities across the nation for a long time. In one of the fast-growing cities nationwide, Houston was initially much smaller with a bulk of its population residing in the neighboring communities and city’s wards.

You’ll discover the South Side is further split between the Southwest and Southeast. If you’re looking to rent in the Southside, here’s what you should know.

The Southeast

The Southeast revolves around the Third Ward, which centers on Alabama Street and other blocks in the community. Other Southeast areas include Yellowstone, Sunnyside, and South Park. South Park is a huge community divided by Martin Luther King Boulevard with blocks and hoods around Southbank and Herschelwood.

Southeast Houston is a huge and diverse community that extends from south of downtown to Pasadena border on the southeast side. The district comprises numerous affordable condominium complexes and single-family homes.

You’ll find a more urban landscape on the north side while the south is somewhat rural and more suburban. You’ll find numerous affordable complexes and single-family homes in the neighborhood’s southeast part.

Various options exist along Interstate 45, 610 Loop, and Almeda Road. If you’re considering the south side, bear in mind that newer subdivisions are comparatively more costly and feature a suburban-rural feel. Nevertheless, the area has witnessed a population and real estate boom over the past decade.

Things to do in the Southeast

Culinary Scene

Southeast’s culinary scene is diverse, reflecting its demographics. You’ll find everything from taco stands to Vietnamese shops across the expansive area. You’ll also find numerous highly-ranked Mexican and Salvadoran restaurants along Highway 90 and Almeda Road.

Recreational Opportunities

Southeast Houston has numerous parks for dog walkers, joggers, and bicyclists. Renters can also access the sports complex next to the Houston Police Department. It has a huge driving range for golfers along with softball fields.

Southwest

The term Southwest describes the region that opened after World War II. It comprises areas such as Alief, Sharpstown, and Fondren. Alief is a huge, ethnically diverse neighborhood while Fondren is a center of the Jewish community. Sharpstown, however; comprises a huge Asian American and Hispanic communities and was Houston’s initial master-planned community.

Neighborhoods in Southside

Sunnyside

The community is outside 610 Loop and is predominantly African American. You’ll find the housing here reflects a suburban-style. In terms of recreation, you’ll find the Sunnyside Park, which includes a playground, bicycle trail, and basketball pavilion. The community hosts the annual “Chocolate Bayou” festival.

Meyerland

The southwestern community is named after the Meyer family. The center of the Jewish community is in this community, which is also home to Meyerland Plaza. In terms of recreation, the community has Meyerland Park, which falls under the category of a neighborhood park. You’ll also find Herbert Godwin Park-a community park.

Final Thoughts

Houston offers a wide range of neighborhoods from which to choose. When selecting one, don’t merely focus on convenience to work. You’ll want to consider you need and like to do after and before the daily grind.
