5 Tips For Introducing Your Dog To Your New Apartment

Regardless of how thrilled you are about moving into a new rental, this could be stressful for your dog. Your dog might feel uncertain about the new environment, which could lead to behavioral issues that weren’t an issue in the past.

It’s easy to involve your family in the moving process but forget the impact the new home and move will have on your dog. Remember, your pet also needs to familiarize with the new environment and find his way around the apartment. Fortunately, this guide offers tips on how to introduce your dog to a new rental.

1. Give the dog a tour of the rental

To prevent or at least decrease the unpleasant outcomes of a move into a new apartment, include the dog as early as possible in the moving process. Before you move, walk with the dog on-leash through every room of the apartment.

Dedicate your time to get him comfortable in the new environment. Lay the dog’s preferred blanket in the room where he’ll sleep every night. Ask him to lie in that area and give him a unique treat. Choose a dedicated spot where he’ll obtain his meals and put a small bowl of water and food in the area.

Watch for any areas that might be a safety concern for your pet, for instance, basement stairs, utility rooms, and crawl spaces. Ensure you can secure and block off the areas to prevent your dog from gaining access without supervision.

2. Use a Calming supplement like Composure if necessary

There’s nothing wrong with prepping your dog using anti-anxiety products. Actually, Composure or Zylkene is an excellent way of ensuring your pet enjoys the new place. Begin issuing these supplements before you begin packing, and continue with them while the pet settles into the new apartment. This is an excellent way to take your pet off the edge.

3. Bring Your Pet’s Favorites

It might be tempting to get the dog new accoutrements; however, this isn’t a good time for the introduction of new items. Instead, take the dog’s favorite toys, treats, bed, and other familiar things. Place them in comparable places as they were in your former home. Favorites help your dog to feel at home and in control faster.

4. Decrease Anxiety

Think of ways of easing your dog’s transition. A number of animals will feel best near you while others will do better while away from the chaos. Perhaps you should consider taking your pet to a friend during the move.

5. Let the dog visit throughout the moving process

If you’re relocating across town, permit your pet to visit the new place and check it out throughout the day. This is particularly advisable if your move will take a couple of days. The more you do this, the more your pet will be comfortable in the new rental once you settle in.

Final Thoughts

If you’re concerned about the move for your pet, consult a dog behaviorist about making the move as smooth as possible.
