The Ultimate Moving Checklist

Whether you are moving to a new apartment or home across the country or across town, pre-planning is vital. After all, moving is a big undertaking and keeping track of everything you need to do can be difficult.

Additionally, moving is stressful and entails a lot of organization, work, and careful planning if you want to enjoy a smooth process. Nevertheless, you can make things easier by using this checklist.

2 Months to Moving Day

You probably think two months to moving out is too early to begin a checklist. However, the key to a stress-free and successful move is preparation.

You’ll discover that moving house typically takes longer than anticipated and obstacles will arise, especially if you are packing your belongings. Moving tips before moving out include:

  • Establish an Organizational Method

Staying organized throughout your move will facilitate a smooth process. Determine whether you want a paper binder to keep your receipts and plans or whether an online method is more appropriate.

Make sure you keep track of insurance documents, all estimates, contracts and anything else associated with your move.

  • Select Your Moving Service

Numerous options exist and a major factor in deciding between movers is your budget. After researching, select at least two reputable companies.

Don’t depend on estimates over the phone. Instead, make sure you set up an appointment and have them visit your home, go through all rooms, and provide an estimate for the move.

Bear in mind that most companies give the option of packing for you. While this can increase the moving cost considerably, it can also make it less stressful.

  • Secure Storage

Determine whether you require long or short-term storage. If you leave this too late, you may have to settle for a costly, last-minute storage solution.

You may designate a small safe or secure box to store your important documents, including passports, birth certificates, and social security cards. You should also consider storing items such as jewelry and family heirlooms in this place.

  • Spring Clean

Take stock of your personal belongings and determine what you’ll take, donate, sell, or discard. Take the time to go through your items, room by room.

It may be a good idea to rent a dumpster if your home has stuff you haven’t sorted in years. Going through your belongings will also help you establish whether you wish to obtain additional moving insurance for any fragile or expensive items.

6 Weeks Before

  • Garage Sale

Having a garage sale before your move will help you decrease the stuff you require for your move. Furthermore, you’ll earn extra cash. It’s important you pick a date or think of charities for your unwanted items.

  • Packing Supplies

This is the time to begin collecting bubble wrap and boxes for your move. To get free boxes, try inquiring at the office supply or local grocery store. Ensure you stock up on packing tape, markers for labeling, and newspaper for padding.

1 Month

  • Begin Packing

Safe and secure packing is time consuming, so begin packing as soon as possible. Start with the items you use the least, for instance holiday decorations. Make sure you label every box clearly and separate valuables.

  • Update Your Address

Contact the post office and fill the necessary form. Update your address with schools, banks, and other significant contacts.

1 Week

  • Clean the House

Clean out your basement, attic, garage, and closets. Double-check the cabinets and make sure you’ve emptied them and discarded perishables.

  • Cancel Scheduled Deliveries

Contact your water bottle or newspaper delivery and cancel or re-direct them to your new address.

Moving Day

  • Keep Your Paperwork Nearby

Prepare a list with the new address for your movers. Thereafter, examine and sign the inventory list. You should also make sure your copy is in an accessible place and ensure you have the mover’s phone number.

  • Energize

Make sure you have a balanced breakfast and plenty of water to keep you going on the big day.

Although moving can be hectic, you can facilitate a successful process with this list.
